milkweed seed pod

Buy art

This is a milkweed seed pod, the fibers have been used for many things in the past.

One use for the waxy milkweed floss is as a substitute for down feathers.

In WWII milkweed fibers were collected for stuffing life vests.

  1. Amazing photos, Evan. The milkweed fibers dont look substantial enough to be a life-saver, do they? More like candy floss ... with chocolate chips in it!
And, Evan, thanks for choosing to follow my blog The Urban Gardener. Glad you liked it!

  2. Thanks Sunita, yeah the fibers are fairly thin. It does look pretty tasty from this view and I'm now craving chocolate chip cookies.

  4. Thanks Marvin,

I only had a few pictures left before my card was full so I was a little extra careful about the shot.

  6. Hey Nature Nut, thanks.

It was a little cloudy out but it looks like that may have added to the shot.
